I rent out a home where the bathroom flooded and left a hole in the ceiling underneath in the kitchen. The house was built in the 70's and has a textured ceiling. Textured as in joint compound was put on thick and it was stippled with a brush of some sort. I hate the ceiling anyway and would jump at the chance of covering it up completely but would rather not spend a fortune doing this. Have considered a cailing tile of some sort or even sanding lightly and just putting a thinner drywall right over the existing ceiling . Looking for the easiest fix in this situation as I dont have aot of time for this project and it needs repaired sonn. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!

The quickest easiest fix would be to patch the hole and duplicate the existing texture. From your discription it sounds like a stomp texture. If you supply a pic we could tell for sure and instruct how to duplicate it.

Another option would be to scrape off what you can of the texture and skim coat the ceiling and either have a slick finish or retexture with your choice of texture. This would have minimal cost unless you consider labor.

You can hang drywall over the existing providing you use screws long enough to secure it to the rafters/joists. It would then need to be taped and finished.
