I was debating doing the hardwood flooring in my house myself. I was also checking out contractors at the same time. This company does hardwood flooring (http://www.dorelflooring.com/) here in Phoenix.
I really like what they did in the picture you see on the home page. Are those little strips and pieces available pre-fabricated (pre-cut, whatever) or does it all need to be cut by hand?
What would you use to cut those long strips anyway?
Thanks!

UncaYimmy,
Those "strips" are part of a "custom" cut and fit "border". The lighter strips appear to be Maple Wood and the darker strips (again part of the custom border), appear to be Mahogany Wood. The strips are custom cut using a table saw and cut with a 1-2 degree bevel on both leading edges (normaly) to ensure a tight fit.
This is not something that I would suggest a homeowner tackle, (doing custom borders or also known as "inlays" or "accent strips"), as detail and precision layouts and cutting is a MUST.
These custom installations do run a bit more, when done by a professional flooring company... from the looks of the website that you provided the link to - this company does do a great job. They are insured AND bonded which tells me they specialize in high end work.
Hope I answered your question(s)...

P.S. I just looked at the link that you provided again and the detail around the island in the kitchen has (3) three different species of wood inlaid to the border! Very nice and extremely detailed work!!

Thanks for the info. The Internet is a good thing. It keeps novices like me from biting off more than they can chew. The more I look into this, the more I think I'd better call in a professional and get something I'll be really happy with.
