Is there a website that shows the proper configurations used in sink and tub drains? I'm specifically looking for a guide on the different washers and and pipes used in drains. For instance, the compression washer vs. the flat washer and which direction the pipes should run.

There are books on basics of plumbing available at home/hardware stores. They explain the basics so a novice can understand that mysterious stuff. And they usually show enough details to answer your question.
