Hi I want to custom make shelving system for my nursery closet. I was going to use particle board with a white laminate but i read that they have Formaldehyde type glue, which is not safe. So i decided to buy solid wood.I would like to know which paint should i buy, that will give me a nice smooth finish, and that will not release odor onto clothes that are placed on?

There are low VOC primer/sealers and paints available. These tend not to offgas the odors associated with volatile organic compounds. Lightly sand shelves, prime/seal with low VOC primer and paint with low VOC semi-gloss latex or acrylic paint. Do your painting in the garage and allow to thoroughly dry before bringing indoors. If there is odor, leave shelves in garage or place outdoors to expedite any offgassing of VOCs. Purchase primer/sealer and paint at a local reputable paint store where you can get quality products and advice.
