Hello all. I'm a renter and just got a new apartment. The previous tenant painted 3 walls in the bedroom red and 1 wall black. . .i know. so now I'm planning on painting over it with a light grey. my question is, is there a quality primer that I can use to cover those colors or does anybody have a suggestion as to what would be the best way to cover these walls?

Who's paying for the paint?

Usually you are best off going to a paint store for both paint and primer. I'd use a problock primer from SWP although zinnser makes some good primers that might be available at a big box. Oil base kilz would be ok but there are a lot of reports of adhesion failures with the latex kilz primer:eek:

A high-hide primer is what you want. Personally, I wouldn't use ProBlock for this use, as its hide is quite poor. SWP makes a high-hiding primer although I admit I cannot remember its name off the top of my head.

ProBlock can be useful if you think there might be stains lurking on the paint surface that need some light-duty sealing, just don't trust it to hide at all.

Alternatively, you can just plan on up to three coats of finish paint. If you use a high-quality paint, you may get lucky and be able to get away with two coats. I wouldn't use anything less than SWP Duration or BM Aura if you want to try that route.
