Putting new steps and risers (Pine) and plan on staining them. Was planing on putting water base Varathane floor finish. Don't want to be slipping on stairs/ Was thinking of sprinkleing a little sand in final coat. Think thats oer kill or is there something else I can do.

Sand works, but there are commercial grits available that are not as course, easier underfoot. Carpet strips, anti-slip strips, etc., are other choices. But many finished treads have nothing but the finish, and are not slippery, unless you have wet or oiled feet.

IMO unless you have special needs, nothing should be added to the finish. The treads are probably slickest when stocking footed but a little care and there should be a handrail if needed......... it shouldn't be a problem.
