first of all I need to learn my lesson - I was searching all over for a tv repair forum when I should have come straight here

I have an Insignia HDTV 30" tube tv. in the upper right hand corner there is a dark patch or haze that is really noticeable on light colored backgrounds - any ideas what it is and how to fix it?

thanks for reading - double thanks for posting

Is there a stereo speaker close to that corner, or anything else with a magnet in it nearby?

no in fact there is a speaker on the other side but not the icky side

it is in the upper right hand corner and of the 4:3 ratio it covers maybe 15% of the screen with a brownish yellowy haze - like a cloud that never moves

when we switch to the 16:9 ratio it stays put and the same size

Does sound like a gause problem like Rick was thinking...as am I.

Know anyone with a degausser? If not, your TV (screen) is toast.

ok - so google solved the "what's that?" question and I found a handheld degausser for $14 at

does anyone know how successfull these things are? and if I don't degauss it what is the life of the screen? just annoying or downward spiral?

If you don't get it solved here, this is a good place to try.

If I remember correctly, modern TVs have a built-in degauss that activates when the set is turned on.

Most of them do have built-in degaussing. If it's not done properly it can cause more harm than good. Not necessarily permanent, but it's a bear to get it back to normal if you mess up.

Turn the TV off and shine a flashlight on that area. If you see a ghost of a picture, the tube could be "burned". That's usually the result of playing a video game with the score or other very bright info box constantly displaying in that area. There are "scrubbers" that will remove that burn-in, but the cost outweighs the benefits. In that case, either live with it or save some $$ for a new TV.

Another question: Can you see all of the graphics at the bottom left of the news nets like CNN or Fox? Or is some of it cut off? If it's cutting off the bottom of the picture the magnets on the neck of the CRT may have shifted (possibly due to being bumped while moving it).

The cause could also be due to electronics, but I always look at the simple fixes first.
