We just bought a house that has a 9-year old flowering Japanese Maple in it. The tree has been neglected & the trunk has grown straight up to about 20 ft. tall. Any suggestions on how to trim it so it regains that 'umbrella' look, without damaging the tree health?

Hi Mik,

Congratulations on your new home!! I've never heard of a Japanese maple referred to as having flowers. Do you know the botanical name of it? How about some pictures of the leaves and the entire tree. That would be most helpful.

sorry but not proficient enough 2 supply pics- would take me 1/2 day that i dont have. The trunk shoots straight up from the 'canopy', or umbrella appearance about 10 ft. higher and its trunk there is about 2-3 inches in diameter. I want to prune it in fall after the 1st frost but don't know if I'll damage it by sawing off that trunk above the 'umbrella' area.

Mik, I need to know the type of tree you have in order to help you. Is this a weeping Japanese maple like this? It could also have green leaves.
