Air Conditioning - tempstar AC not cool enough

Hi, all,
I have a tempstar model CA1024VKA1 inspected for home purchase. The AC is 17 years old. Inspection report indicates: temperature drop is 10 degrees less than the normal range of 15-20 degree. R-22 was added and the problem is still there. In addition, there is low pressure in the system. I am wondering what is the problem and how I can fix it by myself if possible.

The unit is past its life. 12-15 years is the endlife of such systems - It is better to replace this one rather than fix it - Any repairs will go out the window considering it will fail beyond repair sooner than later.

Does anyboy know how much it costs to replace it (tempstar) approximately, including the parts and labor? Should I rreplace the furnace too?

I am in Springfield, Illinois. My house is built in 1991 with 2600 sf (not including the basement). The house have two AC units, one for upstair (1250sf) and one for the first floor (1250sf) and basement (1000sf). The AC is tempstar installed in 1991. The TempStar Model #CA1024VKA, Tonnage: 2.0 for both the AC with furnace. I am planning to replace one unit for now. I do not know anything about the AC. Please give me advice.

Total system replacement - In Illinois I would suspect it would sell (Called a retrofit)for $1500-$2000 per ton. So if you had a 3 ton unit - it would be in the range of $4500-$6000 dollors. That would be the Airhandler and condenser unit installed. A furnace might be a bit more.

I would replace both! I would also spend the money on a higher seer unit like a 15 seer. You will have a higher resale of the home. Id also say that 1500 per ton might be low for a good company. It will be more like 2000 to 3000 per ton.
