i just have a simple question, between split and self contained, which is the most/least expensive to install, just the parts. I've found self-contained systems for around $2200, but i can't find anything on air handlers or air conditioners. This is for AC only. I'd rather not screw around with the split system, but my wife would like to know the difference. Thanks.

Split will cost more up front. But if it breaks will be cheaper to repair. You also don't have to look at the big GTU everyday. Split system can have a much higher SEER rating.

my home is, like i've read many other posts about, has baseboard boiler heat, and only a wall ac. The wall ac works great, if it runs all day on normal and not economy mode. I like the idea of a self contained because its all charged, ready to go. Then i don't have to hire some to install charge lines and fill them. I've found a free J calculater program so hopefully i can do some measuring up and get the right size. Thanks.

By self contained are you talking about a package unit gas or electric?
We use alot of them in mid Tenn. (not very many basements only crawlspaces) nothing wrong with them but there are some efficiency limitations only because the manufacturers limit variety because most of the country (except mid south and some parts of Cali and Ariz.) doesn't know what a package unit is

We just went through this same dilemma - central AC or Mini Split system. Also have a typical New England home with baseboard heat.
Long story short - we elected to go with a mini split system. Many reasons in the choice.

the link above is my old post - it might help you?
Over all the minisplit we have also doubles as a heat source for spring and fall weather to help cut down on oil uses.
Plus so far the electrical usage this summer is less then last year with window units. and is much cooler in the house!
