So, this is a task for all you electrical wizards out there. My dad let me have his old turntable with an AM/FM tuner and 8-track player for the low price of cheap as free.
however, there's a bit of a problem. I have no idea how it works, and the power cable is severed in two. I tried to just strip the cable and twist the ends of it together (images one and two), but when I plugged it in I think I might've either ****ed up my outlet, or the lamp that was plugged in (there was a humming noise, and the lamp went out and will not turn back on).

I should've waited till tomorrow to go buy some electrical tape, but I was impatient.

More pictures (and problems) to come if this gets fixed. Thanks.

Did you check the circuit breaker in the main electrical panel to see if it's been tripped?

It would be best if you could replace the entire plug & wire from the point where it connects to the unit. Or at least make the splice somewhere inside the unit so it can't be pulled apart.

If you look carefully at the insulation on those wires, one will have a ridge or seires of ridges. Use insulated butt-splice connectors to connect each to its mate, and make sure that all of the exposed wires are covered by the connector's insulation. Electrical tape isn't a good idea for holding splices.

If your lack of electrical tape caused the wires to touch it could have tripped the breaker like said.

Another possibility is if there is a dimmer on the receptacle you used you could have fried the dimmer and the stereo.
