Moving to VB in late Sept.2008. Would like advice on best areas to rent in, in regards to areas to avoid due to crime, etc. and if anyone could recommend an apartment complex or two for me to consider, I wiuld appreciate it. Or a Rental agency for finding an apartment or house, long term.Thank you.

The Little Neck area offers good schools, lower crime rate, bicycle trail, and a broad range of prices in homes. And, you're only about 4 miles from the beach as the crow flies.
Kings Grant Landing Apartments are just off Little Neck. http://www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/Virginia/Virginia-Beach/Kings-Grant-Landing/propertyoverview.aspx?listingid=10195

Depends a lot on where you need to commute to.
As TP said, Little Neck is a nice area, but it is probably a little pricey compared to some others.
Way out in Chesapeake used to be nice, but it's been a while since I was there.
I think the Great Bridge area is growing some also.
Knew many people who lived in Kempsville
Right across the James River from Newport News, (ack...why can't I think of the name!!! :wall:) they had quite a few new developments going up as recently as a year ago.
It can be a strange area to get used to at first, it may seem like it would be a great neighborhood, but a block over is a cement factory and a truck transfer yard.
You have too look around. Make sure you know where you are in relation to the military flight paths, unless you really like jet noise!

Make sure realtor finds out if home is in flight path. We looked at a house FSBO. I asked if the house was in a flight path. The owner said that it was not. About that time, an F-14 roars overhead.

I lived in VB area for 4 years.
Rented a townhouse (tere are many in the area) in VB for about 6 months and then bought a house in Cheaspeake (Riverwalk in Great Bridge area). We sold the house 3 years later and rented an apartment in VB until we moved.
My suggestion is rent intially until you get a feel for the area, traffic and preferences. VB area is not like othe cities and what can be look colse on a mao can be difficult to get to quickly. - Traffic on some routes and the waterways can cause some problems.
Look at the area both day and night and at different seasons, since it can be variable and a few months to understand the area. The beach is great in the fall (Sept - Nov) when the people are gone!.
