The compressor outside does not seem to shut off when the air conditioning system turns off. I also noticed that there were ice forming on the pipes. I think the switch that turns the compressor off/on is sticking because when I pound my fist on top of the unit, the compressor turns off. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the contactor contacts are sticking. Replace the contactor.
