This question is sort of academic as I've already ordered a 2 gallon thermal expansion tank, but as a point of order, I'm curious:

Is a thermal expansion tank advisable for my 40gal tank electric hot water heater given that I'm on a well featuring a large pressure tank, or would the well pressure tank ultimately serve the same purpose?

You are correct. There is no need for a thermal expansion tank on a well system with an expansion tank already on the water supply.
