A year or so ago I saw a gadening show in which they buried a flower pot in the ground and then put a plant in another pot in the first one. It was good for changing the looks or if you have a plant die. You do not have to disturb your mulch.
I live in Michigan and I would like to do this but wanted to find out more such as what do you do in the winter to protect the pot in the ground?
Thanks for any help.

The pot used as the cache in the ground should have good drainage and be made of a material that will survive freeze/thaw. It is used as a receptable for slipping in a pot of flowers that can be changed out as needed. This allows a quick change out of short-lived plants, plants that succumb to disease and pests, a place to summer houseplants.

Jim, great advice from Twelvepole. You could stuff the pot you leave in the ground with leaves and remove them after the ground has thawed.
