I,m helping a friend with his john deer riding mower it has a kohler engine it cranks and backfires it tries to run and wont he put in a new plug and oil change it started runing bad last year its like a car engine out of time what should I check ?

The flywheel key is the most likely culprit. It's probably sheared and is out of time.

Thats what I think also when I bring it to t.d.c. the pickup? on the flywheel is about 30 degrees past the coil seems thats the whats wrong I can fix a hemi its small engines that hook me l.o.l.
