I'm new to this forum and would appriciate any ideas... My AC unit outside wont kick on. The fan inside the house works fine.
All it does is outside is make a low wining noise and then a short BUZZ from time to time. The fan and compressor never kicks on.
It was fine a few days ago and Bam it just stopping coming on.

The short wiining noise and the "buzz from time to time" is probably your 24v contactor coil, wich is energized when a call for cooling is made. (when your t-stat calls for coolling). If you turn your t-stat to off that buzzing should then, not be present. If it is still present, don't touch the condensing unit before pulling disconnect and or turning off breaker.( you probably don't but you could have live wires sparking inside the c/u.) Anyway I think you might just have a blown fuse at your disconnect or your c/b is tripped. Always a good Idea to pop the service panel once every couple years and take a look see (with c/b off, of course) Hope this helps. you'll probably be transferred to the A/C dept.

Do you have a volt meter & know how to use it?

Thanks guy for the advice. I did get the fan to turn by spinning it myself and it stayed on. Not super fast but pretty good speed. As for the voltage meter I don't have one my Father in-law has one.
"Blown fuse at your disconnect or your c/b is tripped" Where is the disconnect located and do the fuses look like AA batteries but silver.with copper ends. The box is new we had an upgrade to 220 2 weeks ago.
I have picks of the inside of the unit but don't how to post them..

The easiest way to post pics is thru photobucket.com or other photo hosting site. Just post the pics there & provide a link to them here.
Since the fan does turn but not as fast as it should, there is a fair chance the capacitor is bad. Here are some pictures of typical capacitors.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the capacitor and it looked in good shape but I will replace it as a starting point. The fan wont turn on until I move it myself it get it started. As for the compressor nothing but a buz from time to time.

Sounds more & more like a capacitor problem especially if it is a dual (3 sets of terminals) cap. It should be marked with the microfarrad & voltage rating. If it is 370 volts, you can use, and I suggest, a 440 but not the other way around.

Yes it is the one with 3 sets of terminals. There is 2 or 3 wires going to 2 of them and 1 wire to the other one.

Make sure you write down which wire goes to which terminal. The terminals should be marked "fan", "herm" (or "comp") & "com".

Finding a dual cap on a weekend could be tough. If you happen to find two singles, I can tell you how to hook them up.

If you get real lucky, maybe Lowe's or Home Depot may have capacitors. What they carry varies from area to area.

Good deal. Glad you got it fixed. Caps are a common problem & a simple, inexpensive repair. With the symptoms you described, it was almost a "gimme". But that's something that comes with experience. Glad we were able to help.
