My pilot on my gas water heater keeps blowing out and I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. I've sat and watched the pilot to see exactly what happens, and it appears that once the water is heated, the burners will shut off. In the process of shutting off it will blow out the pilot. I do have concerns that my pilot isn't big enough but would that cause it to be blown out when the burners shut off?

It is probably a little more complicated than just "blowing out". First, you might need to disassemble the pilot burner, clean the nurner nozzle and blow out the little orifice located where the gas tub connects to the pilot burner.
Then, is this water heater located in an attic or other extremely hot area, and is there adequate fresh air supply into the area where it is located? ( A well known issue is described as the Texas Attic syndrome)

I'll look into cleaning out the burner nozzle this weekend. Just curious, but how big should a lit pilot be? My flame burns blue, but seems pretty small.
My heater is in the basement where it is rather cool with plenty of air.

Like said clean the pilot orifice make sure the venturi around it is clean. On some gas controls they have a screw that can turn the pilot up or down. Might check . Also might check the gas M/P psi
