Welcome to Friday all.. I have a quick question. I have an aluminum bore briggs that smokes bad. Mod 190437, type 5506-01, code 9008061. The neighbor brought me the engine & an aftermarket ring set (Stens, I think) & a base gasket. Now,, The briggs oil ring is 1 piece & his oil ring is a 3 piece. Not a big deal, But,, do I hone the aluminum cylinder for the rings as I would do a steel bore,, Or should I just put the rings in. Also, is the 3 piece oil ring O.K. in the aluminum cylinder?? I thank all lots,,, Roger

The 3 piece oil ring is fine. If the new rings are chrome then you don't need to hone the cylinder, otherwise I would hone it.

I agree. I would use chrome rings in an aluminum cylinder given the choice.

Thanks, Guys. I do believe they may be cast rings. They only have a black color to them, But I wouldn't know if a chrome ring has a shiny finish, or if an indrustrial chrome is black?? Thanks, Roger.

Generally the chrome rings will be grey with a chrome edge at the contact surface.
