1980 somerset..282 6 cyl. merc. I have reverse, but wont shift into forward. I can go to neutral. and then to reverse, but if I shift into forward it's still in reverse. I took apart the shifter and am convinced the cable is moving forward and backward as it should.Im thinking it is the linkage at the transom but don't know where to start. I don't think the lower unit is shot but???? HELP Thanks Tom

Can't be much more help than this.... Find the cable linkage point at the outdrive and remove the cable. Manually, shift the unit into reverse/neutral/forward - to isolate the problem. If it still will not shift into forward, then the outdrive transmission has an issue. If you can shift it manually through the gears, then your gearshift mechanism at the helm is the problem. If the outdrive transmission is the problem.... you're going to have to find someone else who likes outdrives (I hate both outdrives and outboards..... )
