Hi,

I have an Ikea Ecktorp series that I am stuck with for the moment. It is a discontinued washable tomato-red cotton fabric (not cord), but it is seriously faded. I have some textile dye (dye salt), which is supposed to go directly into a front-loading washing machine, at a minimum of 60 degrees. This dye is recommended for things like jeans, but I am tempted to try it on chair covers. Is this a very bad idea? If I go for it, should I pre-wash the covers with something like Oxy to get out any oils and dirt that might effect the evenness of the tone. Basically all I want to do is freshen up the colour, not change it.
Thanks!
J

It seems you have nothing to loose by dying it, if it's that faded. Just make sure it's colorfast or you'll get red all over your clothes  It's a good idea to wash it first, but it won't guarantee evenness. Just use whatever you use to do your other wash. I don't think it needs anything special. I like to add a booster, like Biz or similar with the detergent.
