Solid Hardwood, Engineered and Laminate Flooring - Remodelling Second Floor Hardwood Flooring

Our home was built in the mid 1800's and still has the original random-width pine floor. We want to remodel the second floor with bamboo but the current floor is so out-of-flat that something needs to be done. What are our options?

The floor layout is as follows: There are basically two rooms, each 13'x15' that are separated by a staircase to the third floor in between them. Also, there is a staircase coming up from the first floor off to one side of the room (a 1980's rehab job we are concidering re-doing especially if we run into height issues). The joists are 2x10 spanning the 13' width and are 14 to 16" o/c.

If they are way out of flat, I'm thinking puring SLC (self leveling compund) is out of the question.

You would most likely need to rip up the pine floor (carefully, because you could probably salvage this wood). Once you are down to joists, you can either shim them to level, or sister them w/2x's.

WHy not sand and refinish what is there? People would kill for the wood floor you have already. Part of the "charm" of older homes are the imperfections of time.
