I have a 1993 Ford Ranger with a 4 speed with overdrive trans. When the vehicle is cold everything is fine. When it gets hot the trans is very hard to shift, mainly in 1st and 2nd but other gears a little. Could this be linkage or is it more likely a bigger problem? BTW, the shift lever did get really sloppy lately.

Thanks

Look under the truck, where the shift lever meets the transmission, and make sure the "PINCH -Bolt" hasnt loosened up. Ive seen more than a few of these over the years, and its at least worth a look.....

I also have a 93 Ranger and I had the same trouble, but I can't fully remember if it was just some gears, or all gears. Anyways, I had someone look at it and the guy said it was my slave cylinder was not seperating enough when I pushed the clutch in to shift. You can see it by looking under the truck on the drivers side looking at the transmission housing. There should be a oval-rectangular looking rubber plug and inside it you'll see the part. I think the slave cylinder costs under 100 dollars. May want to consider changing out a clutch kit at the same time too. Hope this helps.

Also, mine did it all the time, not when it was hot or cold...don't know if that'll make a difference. Check the fluid level too.
