I have a 1993 Ford Ranger XL 2.3 L 2WD Pickup. For over the past year, I have been hearing a whine sound as you accelerate the truck. It's a stick shift 5-speed. Here is what happens:

When you accelerate in gear (except 4th) the whine is instantly heard, and gets slightly louder the more RPMs you run up. When you depress the clutch to shift gears, the sound goes away completely. 4th gear I can not hear at all, so I don't know for sure. Reverse doesn't seem to do it either. I have checked and ruled out it's not my universal joints on my drive shaft, and it's not my rear-end axle. I have stuck a rod through the engine compartment to the front of the transmission housing that bolts to the engine side and can "hear" the whine from the transmission when someone else accelerates the truck while off the ground. This sound is not that of a grinding sound, or anything else but just a smooth whine. I have tried flushing the transmission fluid out and still no difference.

Do you know what this sound could be?

Thanks,

Chris

Sounds like maybe your syncronizing rings in the transmission are getting worn. Maybe try a tranny shop for a diagnosis, and at least a ball park cost of repairs. You don't have to have it fixed there, but at least you'll know. What did you put back in the tranny after flushing?

I put the Macron 4 or whatever it's called automatic fluid back in. It's been several months ago now.

Yes, I know it sounds crazy or whatnot but yes, it calls for automatic transmission fluid for it, and it's a manual. I've been told specifically before not to put manual in it. :)

My 93 Ranger also called for Mercon in the tranny, and it was a 5sp manual

Chris, it is definatly a trans problem, not a synchronizer ring, but wear between the input gear and the driven gear on the cluster. The only time the trans is not driving through the cluster gear is when in 4th gear, hence no noise in fourth. No way to know how long it will last, maybe a week maybe 10 years. Also the mercon is the right fluid to put in that trans. if you put regular 85w90 dope in it it wont go in gear at temps below 50 degrees.

Thank you for the information Wire Twister,

If it is what you suggest the problem is, is it something I can buy the replacement parts or what?

A good salvage yard trans. is the most ecconomical way to go. Please let a techninian drive and listen to your truck before you replace the trans. I have been wrong on other occasions, and would hate to lead you down the wrong road.

Thank you Wire Twister for a fast and honest reply, I greatly appreciate it. When I have time, I plan to see if perhaps someone will drive it and get a better feel for what it's doing, or at least jack up the back wheels and run it from there because it does the exact same thing even without "touching" ground. Thanks again!

Any other suggestions from anyone are also very appreciated and helpful. I love this website!
