How this got passed my wife and I I don't know. In our master bath behind the toilet where the tile from the shower meets the dry wall, it appears that the wall is rotting.

When we press on the affected part of the wall, it doesn't feel soft as if it is moist from water but it is appearing weak. The paint on top of it is coming off. I don't understand how this could be water i the shower head is on the opposite wall.

not trusting myself to do the possible repair, is it possible to replace a portion of the dry wall? Thank you.

Yep, you can replace sections of drwywall. Times like this, making a hole so you can see behind is the usual place to start.

I agree - you need to determine the cause of the weakness first.
Are there any water stains on that wall?
