Is it Birch plywood that paints well, or is there a better choice?

Hey Dale, of the commonly available stuff, yes, birch paints well. I've noticed the Box store near me is carrying cabinet grade hardwood plywood. Not sure what it is, (virola maybe), but its cheaper than birch but with a very similar grain. Took paint great, used it for boxing in a Water heater and laundry room counter supports. IIRC around $27 for 1/2" x 4' x 8' sheet.

Basically any finish grade plywood will paint well although some may have a more open grain [like oak] which may be problematic.
I have painted lesser quality plywoods by filling the bad areas with spackling and sanding prior to priming.

Thanks for the input. I agree that all ply's can be painted, but some require more work in order to get a very smooth finish. Maple, Birch, and MDF looks like the best choice, and when using a very short nap roller one gets a smoother, and better job.

MDO - that's Medium Density Overlay - plywood has a resin impregnated overlay on one or both sides, it's more expensive that most plywoods, but it's what the sign makers use for a smooth-as-a baby's-butt-finish. Not sure about availability in your area, here in the Twin Cities two of the three big boxes carry it in stock.:coffee:
