I am way past being fed up with VCR/DVD combo units in which the DVD side just keeps on spinning or states, "Cannot read disk"... :wall: My first unit that did this is a Sanyo. I put that one in my guest room to watch VHS tapes only. And, of course, I tried the Q-tip-alcohol cleaning thing with no success. Then I banged on it couple of times with my fist and it still did not work.

So then I bought a different unit: a Panasonic VCR/DVD recorder combo. Guess what? After two years now the DVD side(again) will not work. I tried the Q-tip-alcohol cleaning thing with no luck. Two days ago I bought a new Toshiba combo unit on eBay and I am awaiting its arrival. BUT IN THE MEANTIME, I want to learn how to fix the DVD side of both of my busted units. For me, it's the principle of the thing:mad: now that I have two broken units I have an extra one that I can tear apart just to see if I can make it work. Who has tried this and is it possible?

Please do not reply with," don't bother... It will cost you more than it's worth it." Just gave me some ideas PLEASE. If I can't make at least one of them work then I will gladly take a hammer to it -- and with great pleasure:D

Take them to a repair shop for an estimate--if your lasers are burned out--
be sure to cover both units w/ a heavy blanket b/4 applying hammer--I would
hate to see you in the Hosp. & miss you new unit from E-Bay..............

Well the first step would be to go online and see if any parts are available to fix the dvd.I could give you a few good places that list the parts availble for each brand and model #,but I don't think they let us post links here.

The people who run this site have no problems with members posting links as long as it's not an attempt to advertise and cash in on another member's questions.

JessieO, if you post the make & model numbers of the units, Crafstman can point you in the right direction for parts.

I'm not a trained bench tech, but I've been known to poke around inside some devices. Repairing CD and DVD players has always been frustrating for me. Maybe one in ten actually worked when I put it back together. The others went back to the factory.

I have the same problem with the Sony brand of dual-function players/recorder...
And of course, after 5 years it's no longer supported for repairs by Sony and for the nominal price of $179.00 Sony will send me a refurbed unit of some later vintage.
My question, why would I do that when I can get a $79.00 new DVD player-only unit to run DVD's directly and save myself a $100 bucks.
Is anyone really able to repair these things given the proprietary nature of the way parts are restricted to only Authorized Factory Service Centers?
But if you know of any Southwestern PA, or Northwest WV independent repair shops that might be able to look at the unit, please post a reply.
