Its a 3003 or 303 in our house built in 1980. The speaker to the front door works but you cant talk back to the person that is in the house. The outside speaker has no buttons and only has a speaker in the grill. Is the speaker supposed to act as a microphone too? There are 3 wires going to the front door speaker but only 2 are used. Is something missing?

also anyone know how to clean the knobs. they make a lot of static..

thanks

The intercom should have a listen position on the master and probably on the remotes. The person inside controls the switching and must move the lever to the listen position to hear the outsider.
Pick up some tuner / volume control cleaner at Radio Shack Give the controls a squirt from the back and work the controls. That may clean them up a bit.

Yes, the speaker acts as a microphone. It only needs two wires. Also make sure the speaker select switch inside the door is set to Intercom. Are you pressing the "Door Talk" button to talk to the speaker? If that doesn't work, try the Inside/Patio talk button. If that works, the door speaker is connected to the wrong terminals.

Also, both Master Volume and Volume Intercom should be about 3/4 of the way up.
