I always get on sites trying to learn how to grow a nice lawn. Most of the sites you go on have a bunch of pro's showing off lawns that they cut and take care of. What I want to see is your lawn. The average ole joe who is takeing care of his own lawn. I myself am far from a pro, when we move into our current home 9 months ago the yard was a total mess! Im attaching a couple of pics. The one that has the huge bare spot was after mowed all of the huge weeds and volunteer trees that were sprouting up everywhere. The other pics are after I overseeded a bunch of spots. I plan on laying down more seed come fall time. These are of the back yard. Before we bought the house it was a rental for about 25 years.... Mine will never look great, ive got a dog that lives back there full time.
So lets see what you guys have and what you've done.

Lovely back yard. Major improvement in the turf, too. Looks like a great place to have a lawn party or outdoor wedding.
In areas where tree roots compete with grass for moisture and nutrients, these areas can be mulched in and planted with azaleas, hostas, or other plants that prefer partial shade in your growing zone. By selectively removing tree branches to thin the crown, you can let more light in the back yard.
Including core aeration as part of the annual lawn maintenance will open up soil and allow for moisture and nutrients to reach the roots. A soil test will tell you what amendments need to be made to the soil. Your local Cooperative Extension Agent can help with this.
Continue to feed, water, and mow, removing no more than 1/3 of grass blades at a time, and overseed. You are off to a great start, and with ongoing care, the back yard will look like a Better Homes & Gardens photo. By adding beds and plantings along the fence, you can have seasonal interest and color.
