I have a GE Power vent water heater just over a year old. Here lately I noticed that it would only heat water once in awhile. I called the number on the tank, gave them the flash code and they sent me a new ignitor. I haven't installed that yet because I noticed something...The water heater will work if my central air is not on. When I turn on my ac the water heater does the 3 attempts to ignite and then shuts down. Could the ac be the problem?

Hello and welcome,

I personally am not an A/C guy, but I am a master plumber and a heating tech. I also have worked with an A/C contractor/installer enough to help with this question.

YES, I do think the problem could be caused by air conditioning. The blower speed on a/c is increased and if the duct sizing is not correct, the blower could be starving air from the water heater, or even causing a positive pressure. During the heating season, the blower runs at a lower speed so it might not be a problem. If it only happens when the a/c is working I would get an a/c contractor to inspect the ductwork in the home and let him/her make recommendations as needed. They may do this for free or charge a small fee. If they charge a fee, ask if the fee will be deducted if the job is given to them.
