Not sure what you mean by harmful? What would it harm? Here's some info from the American Mosquito Control Association on mosquito traps.

Here's an old discussion re: Mosquito Magnet: http://forum.doityourself.com/showthread.php?t=176488
Sometimes it's nearly impossible to control mosquitos in the landscape. For instance, if you live in an area near water or swamps. You can, however, make efforts in your immediate landscape by eliminating standing water and using larvicides in slow moving ditches, ponds, etc. You can take measures to protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants and wearing repellents. Many recommend DEET, but there are DEET free products such as those by Cutter that are safe for kids and adults. Cutter also has repellents for outdoor spaces. These foggers come in two sizes. One for up to 1,000 SF for protection up to 2 wks. and one for large yards up to 5,000 SF with protection up to four weeks. These products are available at Lowe's. I have a friend who uses the foggers before entertaining, and he swears by them.

Mosquito Magnet attracts adult mosquitos with use of carbon dioxide, heat, and a natural mosquito attractant, which is non-toxic.

Octenol is an insect lure. The EPA says, "Octenol, when released into air, is not harmful to humans, to other non-target organisms, or to the environment. There is the potential for toxicity if ingested."
Read the EPA's full report on octenol and variability of success when used with mosquito killing devices. http://www.epa.gov/opp00001/biopesticides/ingredients/factsheets/factsheet_069037.htm

Dsifer, you might find these sites helpful. These first two are for products you can make from what is in your pantry for insect pests and plant diseases. There are more catgories at the top of the page.
