I just bought (on impulse) a security camera kit @ COSTCO - ASTAK cm-818T3. They got me with 5 minute installation claim ;) Even without opening their packaging i noticed that cameras are wireless but power is not - dahh So I need to run something to the cameras anyway. So now I am rethinking my project. What system would be more reliable in both system reliability and intrusion protection, wired or wireless? Is there a way I can stream my video data to some off site data collection just using my wireless/wired receiver - preferably for free ? :blah: Cause I don't want to buy a DVR nor do I want to run my PC or server full time just for that. Thanks for your suggestions.

Wireless cameras are not secure. They can be viewed by anyone with a compatible receiver. We had an news crew here in Kansas City demonstrate this by driving around with a receiver that was designed to work as an automobile backup camera system. Wired is the way to go. Pull RG59/18-2 siamese cable to the locations where you want cameras, and use a dedicated DVR. You will be glad you did.

Hey thanks! at least once i get to hear what i want to hear :mask: I like wired too & so my whole house is. Pulling the wire shouldn't be the problem, but what about the DVR... I'd like to go with 8 channels if I ever going to expand, but not sure what is more economical & making more sense - separate DVR or built in into the server? I don't have the server yet but was going to build one for the home network use. I really don't care if someone can see what's on my camera that is pointing to the outside entrances and the backyard of my home I do however care if someone can easily shutdown the whole system by turning off the main power to the house - it is fairly easy accessible and @ known location on the track home. My thought was to have my sever run from the UPS backup and update on-line instead of storing it to DVR. Any ideas if it's doable? Thanks!

I would recommend a standalone quality 8 channel DVR. I am not fond of the 'add a dvr card to your pc deals'. You can get online storage, but it is pricey. Many DVR's can be setup to be viewed with a ddns server from the internet and some can send email clips of alarm activations.
