I understand the difference between R22 and R410A... but how relevant is it when purchasing an A/C unit today? Should I steer clear of R22 altogether?

After 2010, no more equipment that contains R-22 will be manufactured in this country. Furthermore, The salex tax on R-22 will undergo a steep increase on a yearly basis for the foreseeable future (up until 2020 when it will no longer be produced).
So, yes, stay away from R-22 b/c in the years to come service work will likely become increasingly expensive and finding parts not an easy task either.

True so True. We probably need to go ahead and rent that warehouse and buy a few tractor trailer loads fo R22 it has nearly tripled in price in the last year. A few miilion invested today should double in 2 years you can go from a zillionaire to a Gadzillionaire man
