Hi
I have a Trane xe1200 ac and the heater wire is melting and the heater need to be replaced. Is this a hard job and can I get the part? Can I just diconect it from the contacts?

heater wire melting? hmmm what kinda heater do you figure this might be? Is this the backup heat electric coils feed wire? Having trouble picturing anything on the AC side that would be tied into a heater.

It is the compressor heater. The wire runs from the top to the bottom of the compressor.

Oh Ok yeah just unplug and isolate the feeds. Order a new one and install it before heating season and cold weather, the compressor belly heater is not needed for AC. The heater is designed to prevent liquid refrigerant from gathering inside the compressor during cold weather.

Not sure how hard it is to replace you may want to just install a universal anyway pull the old one and run by your local HVAC supply and get you one, they should be able to match it up. If they will not sale to you because you do not have a account you might ask about setting up a Cash Account with them some will some will not.

Correctly called a 'CrankCase Heater', you can get universal models, usually for 230v. at any A/C supply house. They are held on with an adjustable 'zip' strap. To be sure of the voltage, just remove the access panel and look at the schematic. See if the CCH leads go to L1 & L2>230v or L1 & N>120v.

The wire melted about a year ago and I spliced it with new wire then but It needs to be replced The stranded wire looked too small then. I think it was 220 down to the heater.

Hmm sounds like a frustrated DIYer. Your CRANCKCASE HEATER is bad and if you put a heavier cable on it it will just burn something up back down the line maybe your house. Nobody said it was gonna be easy LOL. Do it right Do it once.
