I'm having problems with my AC units not cooling the house. The units are 4 years old and the first summer the AC worked so good that I had to set the thermostat to 75 or it was way to cold. In the fall the heat pump kicked on and I noticed that the outside units didn't turn on. I called service and they came out and said the units were not wired properly. They re-wired everything at the air handlers. Now I have even more problems. The emergency heat doesn't work and the AC won't cool the house. A side note is that the re-wiring didn't need to happen in the first place because the thermostat was set to furnace and not heat pump. I believe this was the only problem, but it was noticed to late. The other day it was 95 outside and the ac ran all day and could only keep the house at 80. I tried messing with the thermostat and told it the unit was a furnace again because it worked so well the first year. Funny thing is when I did this and turned it to cooling the units blew hot air. It actually turned on my emergency heat strips you could smell the heat. What can I do to fix this. I have a feeling that the heat strips are running at the same time my AC is trying to cool the house. I have had the AC units checked and they are fully charged and no service issues.

Do you still have your thermostat and condensor/air handler installation manuals? Now you can sit down and read these puppies and figure it all out yourself or hire a COMPETENT tech to fix it. All the information is in the installation instructions but it will take a while to figure it out, a few sheets of blank notebook paper to make notes and draw some diagrams on will be real handy for this peration. That is pretty sad that the installers were so incompetent. Some units have seperate breakers right at the air handler that only feed the electric backup coils, you may be able to simply flip them off to insure that your coils are not kicking in while you are doing your research.

Now that your units have been wired, rewired and miswired, I hope you realize that online help will be, at best, very difficult to do. Schematics would need to be available, and so will the M/N and MFR name for the outdoor unit, indoor units and thermostat. You are in a very tough spot here.

Can you read electrical diagrams? Have you traced diagrams to actual components in a system. If not, your chances of DIY are slim to none.

Also, you talk about having a heat pump and a furnace as well...Though this is possible, are you sure? Do you have a furnace (gas or oil fired) AND a heat pump in your home?
