I have an AC unit that quit working the other day.
The tstat seems to have died, it's blank.
I took out the battery and hooked up a dc power source instead, then plugged it back in the wall but It still didn't work.
I tried turning the fan on and that didn't work, i set it to auto and that didn't work.
I then tried checking the outdoor fan/compressor all i did was push the button by the "relay?". This did turn on the outdoor module. Does that mean the outdoor device is ok?
Could my problem be somewhere in the furnace electronics?

Remove the thermostat (not the wall plate on which it mounts).
Then place a jumper between terminals R and Y. If the a.c. kicks ON, your thermostat is bad indeed.

If your t-stat is a power stealing type (no battery required) and the screen went blank you have probably lost your low voltage source (transformer inside your air handler) most of these are circuit protected by a small fuse. Pull the air handler service panel and check the fuse if it is good then we will need to check for proper voltage to the transformer input leads. Most of the time the fuse has popped if it coninues to blow we will need to find the system short and repair it.

I've gotten evrything to work now. I actually say this in my other thread about the same problem. But your reply has me thinking. I'm using an ac to dc power converter set to 4.5 v to power the tstat where a 5.5v capacitor used to be. This combined with flipping the breaker in the air handler got everything to work again.
But now I guess the capacitor may not have been charging because of the loss of the low voltage power supply?
This may only be a blown fuse in the service panel?
I initially thought there was a blow fuse there but I couldn't see anything but wires.
Do I have to open ie. unscrew the cover of the box all these wires are going into?
OH Boy!
I guess i should check this out before i put in the new tsat.
well at least I've got ac for now.
