I have a Rudd 4 ton unit with a Copeland Scroll compressor. It starts fine, but after a bit it starts making a real loud racket like its trying to seize up. Sometimes it restarts and on other times it sounds hung up. I shut it down rather quickly. I replaced the relay contactor because the points were burnt and had the capacitor checked (they said it was OK). I know I need a tech to look at it, but really need to have an idea of what it might be first. Las Vegas isn't renown for honest mechanics. Thanks

From what you are reporting, it sounds like slugs of liquid refrigerant are trying to pass thru (inside the compressor). Scroll compressors are good, very resilient.

The burnt points on the contactor contacts (though could just be normal wear and tear), may indicate an unusually high electrical current.

Has this unit been serviced recently, and perhaps an abnormally high amount of refrigerant was added, with the pretense of the unit being low in refrigerant?

How old is this unit?
