I have a 15 year old trane XE1000 - 1/2 ton ac.

in 2006 the coils developed a leak and it was replaced with a 3/4 ton coil

came home tonight and the breaker had tripped

reseting the breaker, the compresser does not run - the inside (furnace) fan does - and the breaker does not trip.

Also I hear a "click" when the inside switch is turned to cool on the thermostat.

The outside compressor fan rotates freely.

I am thinking that the relay(?) blew and power cannot get to the compressor.

I am also thinking that it should be a fairley easy fix.

Any thoughts -- which part to replace? where to get the parts?

All help appreciated!!!

Start with the basics. Is power being received to the units contactor and if so at what voltage. If all wiring is intact and proper power is being received at the inlet side of the contactor what happens if the contactor center section is pushed in with a good guality INSULATED screwdriver. Note: If you have a good volt meter and electrical checking skills you still need to be very careful checking hot circuits, always look and think about where your hands and meter probes are and where they are going next PAY ATTENTION and take your time it is not a race to see how quickly you can get electrocuted and killed. Be safe men. If you are not comfortable with this type of work step away from the unit and call for Professional service.
