I have an SM2789BT8 and an SM3289BT8 that are suffering from the same problem. One day when they were turned on, the sound came on, but there was a loud popping, and the the picture flashed once and went black and never returned. These were seperate incidents that occured at different times.

From reading other posts here, it seems like the picture tube is the likely suspect. One post said that Zenith picture tubes are notorious for breaking, and based on the symptoms, this diagnosis makes sense.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, along with any additional resources that you may have.

Edit: They are both from 1994

The tv's being 14 years old,I would sugest that you got your monies worth out of them and time to get new sets.

See thats the thing. The cost of properly disposing of them and then buying a new TV could be much higher than just fixing one broken part.

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong and if the cost is actually going to be lower or not.

It's probably not the CRTs. They normally don't fail like that -- they usually fade away over time.

My guess is an IC chip failed.

Read HotinOKC's Sticky Thread (http://forum.doityourself.com/showthread.php?t=309110) about TV safety.

Pop the back off. Look closely at the board for burned components. Don't touch anything! As you look at the board from the back, the far right corner houses the vertical IC circuitry.

If something's burned it can be fixed by a qualified tech, but a DIYer would probably be in over his head. One obviously burned part usually means several other bad parts that may not have any physical damage.
