The walls in my new house have a sand texture. I don't want it.

Is the fix sanding? Anything that will make it quicker?

ADDENDUM: It is drywall.

If you can sand of the sand texture - great! if not you need to scrape it and then skim coat the walls.

Explain to me this "skim coat."

that would be applying a thin coat of "mud" across the entire wall to fill in any damage to the drywall.

then, if you are like me, you sand for the rest of your life smoothing out the skim coat and then go to the painting process.

If it were me, I would try a masons rubbing block (on an inconspicuous area) to see if that takes off the sand finish without doing too much damage to the dryeall. The paint may clog the stone too fast though but it may be worth a shot.
