I'd like to put brick or a faux brick product on a wall in my living room. I want it to look great, but not be too costly. Any suggestions?

I know they make sheets that look like brick, but I'm not familiar with it. As a painter I would do the following:

first, experiment a lot before undertaking an entire wall.

What I would do is, get a couple of grey paint colors, one darker than the other. I would use either use a laser level, or mark in pencil (just inch marks every few feet across the wall where my "grout" lines would be. I would paint a solid line thicker than what the grout will be, where the grout lines would go. I would then use a sponge with the other grey paint ontop of the lines. As I said, experiment first to get the right sponge (or other item, such as cheesecloth, etc.) to where you think it looks like grout.

Once I had all the grout lines painted, I would wait a few days for the paint to cure, and use blue painters tape (the width of grout) to tape where the grout lines will go, both horizontal, and verticle. Now, you should still see some grey, which will get painted over with the brick colors.

Repeat the same technique with two or three colors for your brick. Again, practice with different sponges and applicators.

Once you think you have the technique down, do a two or three foot test section on the wall, step back and look at it, and see if you will be happy with it.

good luck.
