I have a Simplicity 611 lawn tractor with an 11 HP Briggs & Stratton vertical shaft engine that is leaking oil out the bottom. Sometimes it leaks a lot, sometimes a little. I presume the crankshaft seal is leaking and am planning to replace it. I'd like to get some reassurance that the seal can be replaced from outside the engine before proceeding to take the engine out.

Yes, you can remove it and replace it from the outside, and usually without removing the engine from the frame. Remove the stack pulley from the engine and you'll have access to the seal from there. It may be awkward to replace it while still on the frame, so you might pull the mounting bolts and sit the engine on end to do it.
