I have an interior wall/walls to paint. The one wall is severly smoke stained. Should I use a zinnzer or something prior to painting or will the smoke stains not bleed through.

You will need to use a solvent based primer/sealer. Latex sealers do a poor job of sealing stains. A solvent based sealer will also lock in the smoke odor - if not sealed the odor can reappear on damp days.

Zinnser's BIN is a pigmented shellac = best sealing primer availablle. Can't judge from here if an oil base sealer would be good enough.

As a side note, if the smoke stains are bad enough that you have to use that Thermonuclear Weapon of primers, Zinsser BIN, make sure you purchase a cartridge respirator... it is really stinky/choking stuff.
