I would like to have hot water to wash my horses with. I don't want to go to the expense of having water lines ran to my barn. I have seen portable hot water devices but they have a 10 - 20 gallon limit. Is there a way to install a tankless heater - or an old fashioned water heater (electric preferred) and have the water coming in through a garden hose and going out through a garden hose?

Any type of pipe CAN be converted to just about anything.

If the pipe is copper and you can solder, Jut buy two 1/2" or 3/4" copper x female adapters, then get the appropriate sized boiler drains. You now have hose threads on each line. If you cannot solder, you can buy similar fittings in commpression x female and do the same thing.
