I am tring to install what was described as a hanging shelf(Although this one dosn't actually free hang). Back of shelf is mounted to a 1X1 mounted into studs. The front are supossed to get mounted onto short spindles that are attached via a "Handing bolt", these bolts are driven into the joists. My question is without special tools how do you drill straight and true holes in both items so they will match up when put together. My first couple of attempts at this are bad leaving the spindle jutting off at a sever angle. All suggestions are welcome!!

Hi AJ:

Trying to drill these kinds of holes freehand might turn out to be all but impossible.

You might try mounting your drill on your workmate, construct a "V" groove for the spindles and push the spindle into the drill bit. This way, all the holes will be in the same spot.

If that doesn't work, try asking your question in the woodworking projects section of this site.
