I hope this is the correct forum for this question. I replaced an old broken underground galvanized steel water line with black polyethylene pipe. It’s 40 inches below grade, 20 feet long, and it’s a 1 inch pipe. I have it on a very solid bed with a few inches of sand under it and about 14 inches of sand above it.

Is it OK if I put the dirt I took out back in as backfill. It does have some rocks in it - some like pebbles other like golf balls. I know the idea is to not have sharp stones or rocks near the black poly pipe. But won’t more than a foot of compacted sand above it be enough to protect the pipe from any rocks? Or over the years could they work their way down to the pipe?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
