Hi, we have two different types of detectors hanging on the ceilings. House is 14 years old. We have typical smoke detectors, and we have a different type of detector. It looks like a smoke detector, but has no test button, no battery, and it has a disk-shaped metal sensor protruding from the bottom. Other than that, it looks like a smoke detector.
thoughts?

Thanks. That is what I thought, but I can't be sure and I'd like to know.

Almost sounds like what a buddy had. A wind-up heat detector..yes I said wind-up. I thought they were part of a sprinkler system till I asked him. Maybe your's are a sprinkler system? Are they wired in?

Thanks for the response. Yes, wired in, I think. Not a sprinkler.

I was able to open one (it has a hinged cover) and I see wiring and a high voltage warning notice on one of the components. No battery.

I'm betting its a heat detector. Pre-set or rate of rise type. I've seen them in houses mounted along with the smoke detectors. The disk at the bottom is sort of a clue. A CO detector would have vents or openings and probably be mounted lower.

Thanks again. I think you are right.

If it has a hinged cover, it's probably one of the ELS 400 series combo smoke/heat. The annoying part of IDing one of these is that the label is on the underside of the mounting base.
