My first post. I have a 2000 Ford ranger, 4x4, A/T with 4.0 V6. The air works just fine excet when I try running the heater with the vent/floor symbol just to the right of "Off" selected, the compressor clutch cycles in and out as if I have selected air conditioning. Here is a photo of my controls.

The clutch cycles on and off when the position (vent/floor) just to the right of "Off" is selected. I didn't get a owners manual when I recently bought the truck, so i'm assuming this position is for heat only. The other positions on the right side are for the floor heat, and two defroster functions which require the compressor to run. The position just left of "Off" is a dash vent symbol and the heat works just fine with no compressor cycling. Am I assuming right that the Vent/Floor symbol is for heat only or is something wrong with the system? I hope the photo works, and if not i'll read the instructions for photo posting....Thanks Stan in SW, Mi.

Edit: Sorry for the blurry photo, but couldn't do much better than this. Maybe someone has a Ranger with the controls like this and can let me know if this is normal. If this is normal, then the heat can only come out of the dash vent or the floor vent but not a combination of both. That seems odd to me, but I havent owned too many Fords.
I have verified that the clutch is cycling by opening the hood and watching it turn the compressor when it engages. It also drags the gas mileage down from 25 MPG to 15 MPG when the vent/floor function is used. I tested it Tuesday on a 170 mile trip.[/I]
