Recently my son bought a home that has the old lath and plaster wall. He is wanting to put drywall mud on them to make them smooth and look like sheet rock. What is the best way to do this.

What do the plaster walls look like now?
If they are in good shape and he is just wanting to change the texture - sand the walls and apply a thin coat of joint compound.
