I am building a small 8 X 8 storage shed. The drainage on the concrete deck on which the storage shed sits flows from back to front. Due to height restrictions, I would like to design a slant roof, sloping back to front with a one foot height differential between the front and back.

Can anyone provide an inexpensive roof design suggestion and material requirements?

Thanks in advance!!

For a single pitch roof, you will need 10 ft 2x4's for the rafters. Spaced 16 inches on center will require 7 main rafters plus 2 for the rake on the ends if you want the roof to have an overhang at each end. You will need a 1 ft. high knee wall on top of the wall close to the house. If stick building, you could use 9 ft. studs to accomplish this(Assuming 8 ft high front wall. If less, then rear wall will be less.) Buy 10 ft. 2x4's to make the 9 ft. studs. You will need 7. If you want the ends to overhang, the front and rear fascia boards will need to be long enough to support the ends of the rake boards. 10 ft. or 12 ft. each. This is only a start. Hope you are not thoroughly confused by all of this. More details about the design would enable us to be more specific.

Thanks for the help. I need all I can get. :(

The front and side walls are 7 feet high. The rear wall is 8 feet high.

If I understand correctly, I should run 9 foot rafters, front to back, spaced 16" on center. One additional 2x4 on each of the front and back attached to the rafters?

This will give me approximately 6" of overhang on the front and back. How can I overhang the sides to prevent seam leaks?

What material would you recommend for the roof to prevent leaks. I though about a couple sheets of plywood with shingles but that would not cover the overhang.

Sorry for the basic questions, but I am a newbie.

Do not apolgize for asking questions. We are here to help.

To zero in on the roof design:

1) How much over hang do you want on front, back, and sides? 10 ft 2x4's for rafters would allow almost a foot at front and back.

2)The overhang at the ends is accomplished by installing a fascia 2x4 across the ends of the rafters at front and back and letting this fascia extend past the sides to support the overhang rafters(rake boards).

3)An 8x8 shed with a slanted roof will require more than 2 sheets of plywood or OSB to deck the roof for shingles. So you may as well add the overhang you want.

4)After you have framed the front and back walls to the height you want, you can install a rafter on the top of each end wall and then cut the end studs to fit.

5)Another roof covering option would be to install slats perpendicular to the rafters and cover with metal roofing panels.

I hope this helps. Post back if you have further questions.
